Team Hallam athlete Sam Budd picked up two medals for Hallam at the BUCS short course swimming championships. Here he tells us about his successful weekend:
Overall the weekend was a real success; the team were high in spirit and in number right from the offset. I was the first race up for Team Hallam and felt quite a bit of pressure riding on my shoulders to set the scene for the rest of the weekend. As I stepped up to the block and the whistle blew I heard massive cheers from my team and that really spurred me on throughout the 1500m race, I touched in a respectable mid-season time of 15.17 and brought a silver medal back to team Hallam.
It was quite a relief to get the 1500 done and shift my focus towards the 50m relays, an event I don’t normally compete in (as a distance swimmer). Team Hallam A team produced some outstanding relay performances coming a close 4th place finish in the Individual Medley and 7th place in the freestyle. Being involved in both of these relays was a totally different experience to what I’m used to, it was an environment I felt comfortable in an enjoyed racing with my team mates.
On the Sunday afternoon I had my concluding individual race, the 400m freestyle, this is one of my main events and had some real tough opponents in my heat. Once again as I stood behind the block I heard my team cheering for me, the whistle blew and the race had started. I had a slow first 200m but I could see all my team stood up and waving their arms for me, I pushed through and managed to come back over the final 200m to secure a bronze medal, this was a really tough race for me after a very big week of training.
Generally the whole team performed exceptionally over the weekend and we were one of the biggest and loudest teams at the finals sessions, the team atmosphere definitely made a huge impact on all the swimmers and helped to some incredible swims. Of these swims Max Litchfield and Olly Crosby were among the medal winners of team Hallam and Izzy Grant produced a very close 4th place finish. The whole team were amazing start to finish and it really was a pleasure to compete for Team Hallam.
