After completing my first year at Hallam rowing I have gained many attributes and skills as well as learning many new things. I knew I wanted to apply for a committee role and feel this role embraces my skills and ambition.
I have a great passion for the sport of rowing and I have been rowing for nearly 9 yrs at many different levels. I was vice captain for my boat club and my rowing experience rangesfrom club and regional events to national and international events. As well as being a vice captain of my club I have captained crews in the Welsh national team and had to take on the leadership role, making important and crucial decisions for my club and country. I have rowed at a variety of indoors/heads/trials and regatta events within the past 9 yrs and my skills have progressed and improved greatly enabling me to go on to win regional, national events, qualify for national teams, Great Britain (GB) trials and row and produce wins at women’s Henley.
I feel I have all the skills essential to being a captain and leading a team, I have completed leadership roles before, I feel I am very team orientated and I work well with others. Being a captain involves working with others on the committee and other sporting individuals. I am very good at communicating and working with others to achieve the best for the team. To be a captain of a rowing club, you need to oversee everything that goes on and provide the support for all the squad and those involved. I feel my personality suits this role. I have experienced captaining and coaching from club to international level and understand the skills and values needed to deliver as a captain, and be an effective member of the committee.
If elected for the role of captain I would like to improve, expand and focus on:
-Ensuring good sportsmanship and behaviours within the club, communicating with all the committee and squads effectively about goals, progress, weekly, monthly and season plans.
- Working with the committee, team Hallam individuals and women’s and men’s captains to create more effective training plans for the team. Discuss tailored training programmes fortheir team crews whilst incorporating skills sessions, water sessions, video reviewing sessions, indoor and S&C sessions and supporting the squad captains with creating team plans.
-Continue and increase the promotion of the club and its membership. Also increase the number of fundraising events and updating social media with the activities of the club.
-Promoting the club at fresher’s fairs and throughout the year, showcasing all achievements and what the club does. During2019/2020 I really liked how the committee compiled a daily takeover on the Instagram page, and I feel this gives others an insight into what the club does. I would like to further buildon and drive this initiative forward using all aspects of social media.
-I want to improve and put a focus on competitive rowing, aiming for the best at all races and all training sessions and working with team Hallam individuals to achieve this. Maintaining team morale and attendance is important to me and overseeing everything that happens within the club, as well as supporting the teams and supporting the captains and committee.
-Organising races and dates with other committee members prior to the rowing year and selecting boats and crews for these events.
-Most of all I would like to showcase Hallam athletes in their full potential improve the club and support all athletes who are committed to striving for the best. As a captain I want create a family like squad, who all support each other and work there best for themselves and others.
- I also want to support and cater for individuals who want to use rowing as more relaxed, enjoyable, social sport and those who want to take rowing further and strive to become higher performance athletes with more focus to their rowing.
-I want to create a happy, healthy and competitive environment for all the squad. I want members to enjoy and be proud of being part of the Hallam rowing team, striving to be their best on and off the water. I understand how training can be a struggle with studies but I myself have had captains who have supported me through studies, I want to able to deliver the same support to the squad.
Finally I want team Hallam rowing to be enjoyable, successful and to promote the positives of university sport. to deliver Support to all individuals in training and out of training.
