Commonwealth and European Swimmer Jay Lelliott speaks about his medal winning successful weekend at the English Winter Nationals.
In December I competed at the Swim England Winter short course Championships. I raced 3 events, the 200 & 400free and 100backstroke. On the first day I had my main event - the 400m freestyle where I placed 3rd in the open final and 2nd out of the British entrants. My time of 3:42.55 shows that I am in good shape for this point of the season.
I had the 2nd day off to prepare for the final day of racing, where I was competing the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke. I set myself some goal times for the day which I achieved in the morning heats qualifying me for the final, this meant that the pressure was off for the finals session and I could just enjoy myself.
In the afternoon session, I had just 21 minutes between my finals swims. The 200m freestyle was first, where I finished 2nd and 1st among British athletes, with a time slightly faster than the morning heats which was a good start to the evening. The 100m backstroke followed and in a tough race I was very happy to finish 3rd with my first personal best of the meet, something I wasn’t expecting to achieve. The whole squad smashed it and The whole team seem in a good place moving into the Christmas break. Next up: Long course season.
