Team Hallam’s Men’s Climbing Team headed to Poland as the number 1 British seed with high expectations of being in with a shot of a medal. With a fantastic start on day 1 with Jim Pope taking the Gold medal in the Lead event and Kieran Forrest taking Silver, this certainly gave the team confidence ahead of the teams strongest event with the boulder to come on day 2. The team certainly did not disappoint and took a clean sweep of medals on the podium with Elias Bignold taking the bronze medal, Kieran Forrest taking the silver medal and Jim Pope picking up another gold medal.
The medals continued to come for the Hallam Trio as it was confirmed Jim Pope made it a third gold medal in the Mens Overall ranking and the Team picked up an overall Silver medal.
Post graduate student Jim Pope said after the competition “ It was great to take part in a multisport competition and have climbing showcased at such a big event getting the attention it deserves. Hallam has always supported its athletes really well with training facilities and resources. The effects of the support was evident at the competition with Hallam taking 1st 2nd and 3rd places in the mens bouldering event”.
Undergraduate student Elias Bignold said after the competition” It has been a pleasure competing with and getting to know athletes from around Europe. It is great that the games catered for such a variety of levels and hosted such a multicultural mix of competitors. Hallam has been very helpful in providing discounted access to training facilities and coaching for its athletes. I am also very grateful for the funding I have received which enabled the wonderful experience of competing at the European university games”.
Teams Hallam’s Performance Sport Co-ordinator Jordan Butler said “it is fantastic to see the team come away with so many medals on the European stage. It shows the hard work and dedication from the team has certainly paid off and it is a testament to the athletes and the support team around them. It certainly tops off an amazing year for our Climbing team. I am really excited to see our athletes continue to compete on the global stage in years to come”.
